The UK BioIndustry Association has appointed Steve Bates as its chief executive, effective 2 July 2012. He replaces Glyn Edwards who has been acting CEO. Mr Bates has worked in the biotech industry and in UK government for 15 years. Recently, he was senior director, external affairs and market access for the UK and Irish units of Genzyme (now Sanofi). Prior to joining industry, he was special advisor to John Reid MP during his time as Home Secretary, Secretary of State for Health, Northern Ireland Secretary and Defence Secretary.
Mr Bates has also been a broadcast journalist. He is a graduate of the University of Cambridge.
The BIA announced the appointment on 25 June 2012.
