The new chief executive of the UK Medical Research Council is Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, who will replace Colin Blakemore at the end of October 2007. Sir Leszek was previously Deputy Rector at Imperial College London, having joined the institution in 2001 as principal of the Faculty of Medicine. At Imperial, Sir Leszek was responsible for the overall academic and scientific direction of the college, particularly in the development of inter-disciplinary research among the studies of engineering, physical sciences and biomedicine. He was knighted in 2001 for his research into develping vaccines, including a vaccine to prevent the development of cervical cancer.
