The French pharmaceutical and vaccine company, Sanofi-Aventis, has appointed Serge Weinberg, a prominent businessman, as its chairman, replacing Jean-François Dehecq who retired after long service.
Mr Weinberg has been involved in politics, television, fashion and finance, among other things. He is a graduate of the École Nationale d’Administration and initially became a civil servant. After a stint in politics, television and banking, he became chief executive of the largest multiband retailer of luxury goods, Pinault Printemps Redoute, in the mid 1990’s. During that time he was involved in the takeover of the Gucci group. He was also chairman of the hotels group, Accor. Later, he founded Weinberg Capital Partners, which specialises in leveraged buyouts and real estate investments.
