Roger Perlmutter, a medical doctor, has been appointed executive vice president and president of Merck Research Laboratories, succeeding Peter Kim who is retiring. Dr Perlmutter is returning to Merck after an 11-year stay at Amgen Inc where he was executive vice president and head of R&D. In that role he oversaw the development and registration of a number of novel biologic and small molecule medicines. Prior to joining Amgen he was executive vice president of worldwide basic research and preclinical development at Merck. Dr Perlmutter graduated from Reed College in 1973 and received his MD and PhD degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1979.
Merck announced the appointment on 7 March 2013.
