Robert Califf has been confirmed as commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration following the departure of Margaret Hamburg in March 2015. Dr Califf has been the deputy commissioner for medical products and tobacco since February 2015 during which time he helped lead the main FDA centers and oversaw special programmes in precision medicine, combination products and orphan drugs.
Prior to joining the FDA, Dr Califf was a professor of medicine and vice chancellor for clinical and translational research at Duke University. He is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco with a fellowship in cardiology at Duke.
The FDA announced the appointment on 26 February 2016.
