Paul Stoffels is to become chief executive officer at Galapagos NV on 1 April, succeeding Onno van de Stolpe, the company’s co-founder and leader for 23 years. Dr Stoffels was most recently vice chairman of the executive committee and chief scientific officer at Johnson & Johnson Inc. He joined J&J in 2002 with the US company’s acquisition of Tibotec-Virco NV of Belgium where he was chief executive. During his years at J&J, he contributed to the launch of 25 innovative medicines across the globe.
Galapagos was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between Tibotec-Virco and Crucell of the Netherlands. Dr Stoffels was involved in Galapagos’ founding and was a member of the company’s first board of directors.
Dr Stoffels studied medicine at the University of Diepenbeek and the University of Antwerp in Belgium. He also studied infectious diseases and tropical medicine at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp.
Galapagos announced the appointment on 26 January 2022.
