The biotechnology company Galecto Inc has made two appointments, bringing in Amit Munshi as chairman, and appointing David Shapiro, the former chief medical officer of Intercept Pharmaceuticals Inc, to its board of directors. Mr Munshi has 30 years experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical technology industries, and is currently chief executive officer of Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc in San Diego, US. Dr Shapiro has a medical degree from the University of Dundee in Scotland, UK and has specialised in fibrosis treatments. He was CMO and head of research and development at Intercept from 2007 to 2019. In that role, he headed development programmes leading to the approval of a treatment for primary biliary cholangitis. Galecto develops small molecule drugs for the treatment of severe diseases, including fibrosis, cancer, and inflammation.
