Professor Lisa Jardine has been appointed chair of the UK’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), effective 1 April 2008. Prof Jardine is a historian and director of the Centre for Editing Lives and Letters. She is also professor of renaissance studies at Queen Mary, University of London. She is a member of the Council of the Royal Institution, a trustee of the V&A Museum and a patron of the National Council on Archives.
The HFEA regulates in vitro fertilisation treatment as well as research involving human embryos. It was set up in 1991 under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990.
