Jörg Reinhardt, former chief operating officer at Novartis, has been appointed chief executive of Bayer HealthCare AG, effective 15 August 2010. He succeeds Arthur Higgins, who left the company in April. Dr Reinhardt has had a long career at Novartis, starting with its predecessor company Sandoz. After Novartis was created from the merger of Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy in 1996, he became head of preclinical development and project management; in 1999 he was appointed global head of development. At the end of 2005, he became chief executive of the vaccines and diagnostics division in the US. At the end of 2008, he returned to Switzerland and served as COO until the end of January 2010.
