Ewan Birney, a leading genomic scientist, has joined the executive board of Genomics England to help the UK government-backed body sequence the genomes of patients with cancer and rare, genetic disorders. Professor Birney is director of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and a senior scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. He worked on the initial human genome project and led the analysis group for the first phases of the ENCODE project, which is working to define functional elements in the human genome.
Genomics England announced the appointment on 26 May 2016.
