Catherine Bréchignac, director of research at the French national centre for scientific research (CNRS), is being proposed as a director of Sanofi-Aventis. A physicist and member of the French Academy of Sciences, Dr Bréchignac will become one of the company’s 16 directors, who include the chief executive, Christopher Viehbacher. She holds doctorates honoris causa from a number of universities and is an officer of the French Legion of Honour.
