Shire Plc has announced the appointment of Bill Burns, former chief executive of the pharmaceuticals division at Roche, as a non-executive member of its board of directors. He will also be a member of the company’s remuneration committee. Mr Burns has extensive experience in pharmaceutical mergers and acquisitions, mainly as an executive at Roche. This includes helping manage Roche’s takeover of Genentech Inc and its acquisition of a majority interest in Chugai Pharmaceutical Co Ltd of Japan. Although retired from Roche, Mr Burns is still a member of the board of directors of Roche Holdings Ltd and a member of the boards of Chugai and of Genentech.
