Pfizer Inc has appointed Patrizia Cavazzoni, most recently a director at the US Food and Drug and Administration, as chief medical officer. Dr Cavazzoni’s role will involve leading the company’s regulatory, pharmacovigilance, safety, epidemiology, and medical information and evidence generation. She was director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA where she led regulatory and policy decisions on prescription and over-the-counter medicines, enabling significant innovation in drug evaluation and research. Dr Cavazzoni brings 25 years of experience including in clinical development, pharmacovigilance and clinical operations. Earlier in her career she led clinical sciences and development operations at Pfizer, as well as holding senior positions at Eli Lilly and Co and Sanofi SA. Dr Cavazzoni has a medical degree from McGill University and completed a residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in mood disorders at the University of Ottawa, both in Canada.
