Jeremy Farrar, professor of tropical medicine and global health at Oxford University, has been named director of the Wellcome Trust. He succeeds Mark Walport who stepped down at the end of March to become the UK government’s chief scientific officer. Prof Farrar is also global scholar at Princeton University and director of the Wellcome Trust’s major overseas programme in Vietnam. His research interests are in infectious diseases and tropical health and include emerging infections and infections of the central nervous system. He has contributed to more than 450 peer-reviewed scientific papers and serves on several advisory committees of the World Health Organization.
The Wellcome Trust announced the appointment on 24 April 2013.
