David Haslam, an adviser to the UK Care Quality Commission, has been appointed chair of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), succeeding Sir Michael Rawlins who is due to step down in March 2013. NICE is the UK’s health technology assessment body. Professor Haslam is a medical doctor and former president of the British Medical Association. NICE will become an executive non-departmental UK public body from 1 April when its remit will also be extended to social care.
The UK government confirmed the appointment on 13 December 2012.
